About Opatija

Croatia is famous for its diverse natural wealth and a rich history spanning over many centuries with a variety of ancient places. Originally a small fishing settlement, first mentioned in the middle of 15th century, it became a well- known meeting point of eminent guests who came to visit patrician. The building of many hotels, guest houses and villas followed and Opatija became a favorite destination of the Austrian Imperial Family and nobility.

The most famous of them was Frantz Joseph I, who used to spend his winter months in Opatija. Other notable people who sought out the richness and beauty of Opatija was Isadora Duncan, Anton Checkov, Gustav Mahler, James Joyce and many more politicians and artists. Due to its geographic location and mild climate, Opatija is accessible all year round and well-linked to European destinations by road, as well as, several Croatian and European airports; Pula 75 km, Zagreb 200 km, Ljubljana (Slovenia) 135 km. While Venice (Italy) is only 208 km away by land.
