About Opatija

Croatia is famous for its diverse natural wealth and a rich history spanning over many centuries with a variety of ancient places. Opatija has the longest tradition of tourism in Croatia, with its roots in the end of the 19th century when Rijeka's patrician Ignio Scarpa, in 1844, decided to build his summer residence Angiolina.

Originally a small fishing settlement, first mentioned in the middle of 15th century, it became a well- known meeting point of eminent guests who came to visit patrician. The building of many hotels, guest houses and villas followed and Opatija became a favorite destination of the Austrian Imperial Family and nobility.

The most famous of them was Frantz Joseph I, who used to spend his winter months in Opatija. Other notable people who sought out the richness and beauty of Opatija was Isadora Duncan, Anton Checkov, Gustav Mahler, James Joyce and many more politicians and artists.
